Once you connect, you can change your nick at any time if you want to. A Nickname (known as a "nick" for short) is the IRC equivalent of a screenname or handle on any other instant messaging program like AIM or Windows Messenger. For the "Nickname" field, type in what you would like to be known as on IRC. I put in my real name and real email address, and no harm has come of it.

Don't worry about privacy, since you can put in a fake name or email address if you so choose. You have to fill in the "Full Name" and "email" fields. Once you start up mIRC, this is what you should see on your screen. At any rate, download, install, and then run mIRC. There are ways around actually paying for the program, none of which I will endorse/explain even though you probably already know how.

Unfortunately, mIRC is not completely free there is a 30-day evaluation period after which you are expected to pay 20 bucks and get your copy registered. There are a few different ones out there, but I would recommend mIRC for beginners. Download an IRC client, which is simply a program that lets you connect to IRC through your internet connection on your computer. And finally, to connect to a server, you need an IRC client.įirst things first. To join an IRC channel, you need to connect to an IRC server. To interact with/download from other users on IRC, you need to join an IRC channel (which is basically a chatroom). What that refers to is the location of the fansubbing group's IRC channel on a specific IRC server. If you have ever watched a fansubbed anime, you will have noticed something like appearing in the introduction. Essentially, it's a really stripped-down version of AIM or any other instant messenger program. So what the hell is IRC anyways? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, and it dates back to the 80's. There are a lot of tutorials on how to use IRC out there on the web, but mine is different in its anime-oriented walkthrough format. You want anime, but unseeded torrents got you down? Welcome to the happy world of IRC, where the files are bountiful, all the transfers are direct, and all the helpful folks are willing to, well, help you out. Honestly, it's kind of hard to mess up your computer by using IRC, but I felt I needed to put this out there just in case someone learns IRC from me and then goes and fucks up their comp. If you are a complete retard and accept suspicious files like "trojan.exe" from users you don't know, it's your own damned fault. I am not liable for any damage resulting to your system or network as a result of your use of IRC.
